Sergeant Major Leggett graduated in 1989 from Pasco Comprehensive High School in Dade City, FL. After spending 10 months in the Delayed Entry Program, he stepped on the “yellow footprints” on 24 October 1989 at Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC. Upon arrival, he was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Upon completion of Recruit Training and Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Private Leggett was sent to Fort Sill Oklahoma, for his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) School to become a Fire Direction Controlman (0844).

After completion of MOS School, Private First Class Leggett was assigned to Golf Battery, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, CA. In August 1990, Private First Class Leggett was assigned to Kilo Btry, 5th Battalion, 11th Marines and deployed to the Persian Gulf as Part of Task Force Ripper in support of Operations Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Desert Saber. After his return in April 1991, Lance Corporal Leggett deployed four months later to Okinawa, Japan as part of a Unit Deployment Program.

In January 1992, LCpl Leggett went on a Fleet Assistance Program to the Joint Reception Center, Headquarters and Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton. While he was assigned there, he participated in Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia.

In November 1993, Corporal Leggett returned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, and in August of 1994, he participated in Operation Wild Fire, in the state of Washington.

In October of 1994, Cpl Leggett received orders to 3rd Marine Division Okinawa, Japan, and was assigned to Lima Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment. During this time, he went TAD to Fort Sill, OK, to the Operations Chief Course.

In December of 1995, Sergeant Leggett received orders to Hawaii for duty with Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. While there, he went on two UDP’s to Okinawa and served as the Operation Chief and Platoon Sergeant for Headquarters Platoon. During this time, he successfully completed the Small Arms and Weapons Instructor Course at Quantico, Virginia giving him and an additional MOS of 8532.

Staff Sergeant Leggett volunteered for Drill Instructor duty and, in December of 1998, he reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion. From April 1999 to April 2001, he trained seven Recruit Platoons, (five as a Junior and two as a Senior Drill Instructor). As a Drill Instructor, SSgt Leggett was selected to attend the Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival Course and was assigned to the Depot Pool to train recruits on Water Survival Skills.

In April 2002, Gunnery Sergeant Leggett received orders to 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for duty with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines. While there he went on two deployments to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraq Freedom. The first as part of a Regimental Combat Team, during the battle of An Nasariyah, and the second as part of the 24th MEU.

August 2005, First Sergeant Leggett received orders to Inspector-Instructor Duty in Concord, CA. In the three and half years as the I-I First Sergeant he worked numerous hours with community outreach programs, casualty assistance calls , funerals and four Toys for Tots campaigns.

After being selected to his current rank in November 2008, SgtMaj Leggett received orders to HMM 364 at Camp Pendleton Ca in February 2009.

His personal awards include the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal with two Gold Stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon with one Gold Star.
