Lieutenant Colonel Doty was commissioned in 1993. He was assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron 7, as a Second Lieutenant in 1994. Here he earned all Tactical Air Operations Center qualifications up through and including Senior Air Director. He twice graduated from Weapons and Tactics Instructor School, once as an Intelligence Officer and once as a Command and Control Officer. While at MACS-7 he served as the unit's Intelligence Officer, Operations Officer, and Weapons and Tactics Instructor.

Promoted to Captain in 1997, he was transferred to Marine Air Control Squadron 2, in Beaufort, SC. While there he served as the TAOC Detachment Commander. He deployed twice to Europe, once in support of Battle Griffin in Norway and the other to Estonia serving under II MEF in a NATO Partnership for Peace role. In May of 1998 he was selected to attend the Command and Control Systems Course in Quantico. Captain Doty graduated CCSC in May of 1999.

Upon graduation from CCSC Captain Doty was selected and assigned to the personnel exchange program with Number 1 Air Control Centre, Royal Air Force, in Northumberland, United Kingdom. While assigned to No 1 ACC he deployed in support of the British Operation Granby in Cyprus and to the UK Falkland Island Defense Force in South America.

Captain Doty was reassigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 in Yuma, AZ as the TAOC Division Head. While at MAWTS he also served as the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence representative in the Aviation Development Test and Evaluation Department and as the Assistant Operations Officer. Promoted to Major in 2002, he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as the 3d MAW Liaison Officer to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines and as the Sector Air Defense Coordinator for South Eastern Iraq.

Major Doty transferred to MACS-1 in 2004, to serve as the Operations Officer. While at MACS-1 he also served as the squadron's Executive Officer and Remain Behind Commander. He deployed as the 3d MAW Security Element Commanding Officer and served as the Echo Company Commanding Officer under MWSG-37 for OIF 5-7. Upon return from Iraq Major Doty was transferred to HQMC Aviation in the pentagon in 2007. He was promoted to his present rank in 2008. LtCol Doty served as the lead for aviation sensors and weapons in Aviation Expeditionary Enablers Branch (APX).

LtCol Doty holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, with a triple major in Logistics, Operations Management and Aviation Management. LtCol Doty is currently pursuing a Masters degree in International Relations from the University of Oklahoma. He is also a graduate of the Air War College (TLS) non-resident program. In addition to his primary MOS, he is a designated MACCS WTI (7277) and C4I Planner (8055).

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4th Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
